United Way has always been about mobilizing community resources to improve people’s lives in our local community.

In 1945, the Greenwood County Community Chest was established and raised a total of $52,500 to fund five agencies. Those agencies included Salvation Army, Tuberculosis Association, Juvenile Council, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Major textile industries and other businesses grew and prospered over the years and began to fund the health and human services organizations. The Community Chest officially became United Way of Greenwood in 1970 and the partnership with Abbeville County began in 1992.

In the most recent years, we have raised over $1 million per year to impact our communities and help improve people’s lives. We now have 20 impact partners delivering dozens of programs to help better the quality of life in the surrounding communities.

The United Way of Greenwood and Abbeville Counties total revenue is generated through employee campaigns, corporate and private donations, and grant funding.
